Chuck,

I think you make the best argument I've seen to date for following lots of people.

Perhaps what Twitter needs is a separate "whitelist for DMs" setting where you don't have to "follow" a person.

As for apps people use to auto-unfollow people who don't follow them back, their users need to be able to specify people to follow whether they get the reciprocal follow or not (or if that feature exists, they need to use it).

However, I still suspect that most people who follow too many people do so either out of a mistaken sense of obligation or to build a list to market to.

Very interesting positions on the auto-DM and follow-back issues. I don't agree completely, so I just blogged my thoughts on the same issues. I reference this post so hopefully my readers will get multiple viewpoints.

[...] As I wrote elsewhere the other day (in the style of Gödel, Escher, Bach :-), the problem is over-following! (If you read “overflowing”, go back and read that last word again). The ONLY way a person can get their message into your DM-box is if you follow them. If you get too many DMs, you’re either following someone who sends too many, or (more likely), following a whole bunch of people you’ve got no good reason to follow. [...]
